How to add page numbers to a PDF

Reports, assignments, theses and legal bundles are much easier to follow with page numbers, and many colleges and offices require them.

Pick where the numbers go and how they look, check the live preview, and Arcanize stamps every page on your own device. Your document is never uploaded.

Live preview: See exactly how the numbers will look before you download.

Flexible format: 1, Page 1, 1 / 10 or Page 1 of 10, in six positions.

Skip the cover: Leave the first page unnumbered and start counting from any number.

Add page numbers to a PDF in 4 steps

  1. Click Select File and choose your PDF, or drop it onto the page.
  2. Choose the position, format and size. Set the first number and tick the box to skip a cover page.
  3. Click Add Page Numbers.
  4. Click Download File to save the numbered PDF.

Good to know

  • One PDF at a time.
  • Numbers are added on top of the page. If the page already has content in that corner, choose another position.
  • Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.
  • Numbers use standard Western digits and a fixed font.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF for free?

Select the PDF, choose where the numbers should go, click Add Page Numbers and download the result. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.

Can I start numbering from page 2?

Yes. Tick "Don't number the first page" to leave a cover page blank. The second page then shows the first number you set.

Can I start from a number other than 1?

Yes. Change First number, for example to 25 if this PDF continues an earlier document.

Do page numbers work on landscape or rotated pages?

Yes. Numbers are placed relative to the page as you see it, so they appear upright at the bottom of landscape and rotated pages too.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The numbers are added by your browser on your own device.
