Short answer: Indian banks build the statement PDF password from details they already hold about you: your customer ID, date of birth, name, mobile number or account number. The format differs by bank and by statement type. Find your bank in the table below, and check the email that carried the statement, because it states the format for that file.

Detailed guides for each bank

How to find the details you need

  • Customer ID (HDFC, Axis). Printed in your cheque book, passbook and welcome letter, and used to log in to net banking.
  • CRN (Kotak). Printed on your debit card and welcome kit and shown in the mobile app. Kotak also sends it if you SMS CRN to 9971056767 or 5676788 from your registered mobile number.
  • Registered mobile number (SBI). The number linked to the account when the statement was generated, which may not be your current number.
  • Name on record. The spelling the bank has on file, which can differ from how you normally write your name.

Not a bank statement? Bills use passwords too

Airtel postpaid and broadband bills are also locked. Airtel sends the password when you SMS ebill password to 121 from your Airtel number. See the Airtel bill password guide.

Tips that apply to every bank

  • Capitals matter. If RAHU1508 fails, try rahu1508, and the other way round.
  • Keep leading zeros. 5 March is 0503, not 53.
  • Day comes before month. Indian banks use DDMM, not MMDD.
  • Use the name on record. Match the bank's spelling, even if it is wrong.
  • Read the email. The message that carried the statement usually describes the password format.

How to remove the password after opening the statement

Once you know the password, you can save a copy that opens without it. That helps when a loan, visa or tax portal will not accept a locked file.

  1. Open the Arcanize Unlock PDF tool in your browser.
  2. Select the statement.
  3. Type the password once.
  4. Click Unlock PDF, then Download File.

The statement is unlocked inside your browser. The file and the password are not uploaded to any server.

On an Android phone, the Arcanize app does the same offline: open Unlock PDF, pick the statement, enter the password and save the unlocked copy.

An unlocked statement is no longer protected, so store it carefully and delete copies you no longer need.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the password for a bank statement PDF?

It depends on the bank. SBI emailed statements use the last five digits of your mobile number plus your date of birth, HDFC account statements use your Customer ID, Kotak uses your CRN, and Axis and Union Bank use four letters of your name plus DDMM of your birth date.

Why are bank statements password-protected?

A statement shows your account number, balance and transactions. The password stops anyone who gets hold of the email or the file from reading it.

Is it safe to use an online PDF unlocker for a bank statement?

Be careful with tools that upload your file to their servers, because a statement contains your full account details. Arcanize unlocks the file in your browser, so it is not uploaded.

Can I ask my bank to send statements without a password?

We are not aware of a bank that emails unprotected statements. You can view statements without a password by logging in to net banking or the bank's app.

The password is not working. What should I do?

Check capitals, leading zeros and the spelling of your name on the bank's records, then read the statement email for the stated format. If it still fails, your branch or the bank's customer care can confirm it.
